K2’s Proflex 5500 mountain bike features a high rigidity, lugless all composite frame manufactured from Applied Fibre Systems’ TowFlex continuous-fibre thermoplastic composites. The monocoque frame was designed from the outset to take advantage of automated processing and assembly technologies, and was awarded The 1998 Product Award of Excellence by the International Composites Expo. TowFlex offers higher performance than current injection molding materials at a lower cost than conventional advanced thermosetting composites. Other applications for the material include orthopedic braces, speaker enclosures, and oil field products.
